Four outstanding Kitchener golfers, Jerry Kesselring, Jerry Kneehtel, Moe Norman and Gary Cowan, were honored Saturday at the unveiling of the Rockway Golf Club’s wall of fame. Individual portraits of the four decorate the wall and on each is inscribed their achievements.

Ald. Frank Hoddle, representing the City of Kitchener performed the unveiling and said the four have brought credit not only to Rockway but also to the city.

Jack Young, chairman of the project, said the wall was brought about at the suggestion of the members. “Visitors to the club will now know who have brought honor to Rockway.”

Young added that a high standard of qualification has been set. To be a member of the wall, a golfer must win one of six major tournaments. They are the Ontario and Canadian amateur, open and junior championships.

Kesselring won 13 titles over the same number of years. He was Ontario junior champ in 1945-46-48; Canadian junior 1946 and 47; Ontario amateur, 194905052 and 53 and Ontario open, 1952-53-56 and 57.

The Ontario junior title was won by Kneehtel in 1951 and 52 while Norman took the Canadian amateur in 1955 and 56 and the Ontario open in 1958.

Cowan scored victories in the Ontario junior in 1956, Canadian junior, 1956 and Canadian amateur, 1961.

Both Cowan and Norman were not able to attend the ceremonies (cutoff from article).

Ald. John Cook, chairman of Kitchener council’s sports committee, presented duplicate copies of the portraits to each golfer. He said that the achievement of the four cannot be measured in dollars and cents.

Bud Donovan, public relation for the Ontario Golf Association, lauded the Rockway club for its contribution to the junior development program. The club is reported to have the largest junior membership in Canada.

The city fathers were also praised by Donovan. “They have contributed much to the welfare of the city, especially in this golf course,” said Donovan, Rockway is owned by the city.

Donovan pointed out that former pro Lloyd Tucker and Bruce Murray, the present club professional, have offered great leadership to the juniors.
